Minutes:

Ardmhéara Micheál MacDonncha opened the Annual Meeting of the City Council by thanking all those who had assisted him during his tenure, in particular the staff of the Mansion House and the Chief Executive’s Office, the Deputy Lord Mayor and other deputies and especially the Lady Mayoress, Claire Fitzgerald. He paid special tribute to the frontline staff of Dublin City Council who had shown great commitment in dealing with the very challenging adverse weather conditions the city had experienced over the last 10 months.

 

He detailed the high-lights of his year in office which included the promotion of the Irish language, his work on the Moore Street Advisory Committee and his trip to Palestine. He acknowledged the efforts of the Council to address the ongoing housing crisis but believed that the Central Government was failing to provide the Council with the support necessary to deal effectively with the issue. He concluded by wishing the incoming Lord Mayor all the best for the year ahead.    

 

Tributes were paid to the outgoing Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor by representatives of all the political groups on the Council, who thanked them for their service and congratulated them on the success of their year in office. 

 

It was then moved by Cllr. C Burke and seconded by Cllr. C Perry “That Councillor Nial Ring is proposed for the office of Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin for the period from 25th June, 2018 to continue in such office (subject to his death, resignation, disqualification, removal from office or otherwise ceasing to be a Member of the City Council) until his successor shall have been elected at the Annual Meeting of the City Council in June 2019”

 

It was then moved by Cllr. E Ryan and seconded by Cllr. A Keegan “That Councillor Michael O’Brien is proposed for the office of Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin for the period from 25th June, 2018 to continue in such office (subject to his death, resignation, disqualification, removal from office or otherwise ceasing to be a Member of the City Council) until his successor shall have been elected at the Annual Meeting of the City Council in June 2019”

 

It was then moved by Cllr. A. Feeney and seconded by Cllr. R McAdam “That Councillor Paddy McCartan is proposed for the office of Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin for the period from 25th June, 2018 to continue in such office (subject to his death, resignation, disqualification, removal from office or otherwise ceasing to be a Member of the City Council) until his successor shall have been elected at the Annual Meeting of the City Council in June 2019”

 

Following a vote, Councillor Nial Ring was declared to be elected Lord Mayor and he was invested with the Collar of SS and the Insignia of Office. The Members of the City Council, Chief Executive and staff all warmly congratulated the newly elected Lord Mayor. For full details of this vote, see Appendix A to these minutes.

 

Lord Mayor Ring then took the chair and thanked his fellow Councillors for their support in electing him as the Lord Mayor. He outlined his hopes and aspirations for the year ahead. The full text of his speech can be found in Appendix B to these minutes.
