Lord Mayor's Business

Additional documents:

Minutes:

The Lord Mayor opened the meeting by remembering the 361 people who died in the earthquake in Mexico on 20th September 2017. He said he had written to the Mexican Ambassador to Ireland to express the sympathies of the people of Dublin.

The recent shooting tragedy in Los Angeles was also remembered and a minute’s silence was held as a mark of respect to those who lost their lives in these events.

He said he had also written to the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy expressing his deep concern regarding the fact that at least 712 Catalan Mayors (75% of the total) have been summoned by Spain’s prosecutor because of their public support to the self-determination referendum scheduled for October the 1st.

He said he also wrote to Mayor Ana Colau of Barcelona in response to her letter of 27th September offering his continuing support and solidarity to the people of Barcelona.   She advised that she would be calling on the European Commission to open a mediation space for the Spanish Government and the Catalan Regional Government to take part in.  I agreed with her that international intervention via the EU is now urgently required.

The Lord Mayor then said he was pleased to report that mediation has been arranged to address recent industrial relations issues in New Priory. The Lord Mayor was then joined by Members and officials in congratulating Councillor Claire O’Connor on her recent marriage and wishing herself and her husband every happiness.

Conferences for approval - Referred from Protocol Meeting held 28th September 2017

·                  Irish Planning Institute – Autumn Planning Conference 2017

·                  Urban Land Institute Ireland Conference 2017

The Lord Mayor then invitedMinister Eoghan Murphy of the Housing, Planning, Community & Local Government Department to address the meeting, saying that the Minister would answer questions at the end of his presentation. Minister Murphy then outlined in great detail his plans and initiatives to tackle housing needs/supply, both current and into the future, to meet the increasing demand and also to find solutions to the ever increasing problem of homelessness.

He gave a comprehensive update on all aspects of the very many schemes and plans that were currently in place or being worked on to address the situation from a government point of view and asked that Members come forward with any other ideas they might have as innovative solutions to the problem. He acknowledged that progress was slower than he would like but emphasised that so much had been done on several fronts to tackle the problem and that new initiatives were being considered on an on-going basis. Members thanked the Minister for coming to the meeting and for his presentation and then put their points of view to him, asking many and varied questions which the Minister answered.
