SOUTH CENTRAL AREA COMMITTEE

M262   Councillor Michael Pidgeon

That this area committee writes to the Minister of Education, seeking an additional secondary school for Dublin 8.

There are only enough secondary school spaces for one in three children finishing primary school in Dublin 8. In 2021, there were 17 primary schools with 3,421 pupils, but only 1,022 secondary pupils.

In Dublin 4, there is a ratio of 13 people to every 1 secondary school place. In Dublin 8, that jumps to 39.

There are currently five secondary schools in Dublin 8: all religious, all teaching through English. Just over half (53%) of people in Dublin City Council are Catholic, with nearly a quarter non-religious (23%).

This area committee requests (a) improved funding for the existing secondary schools in the area and (b) a new, mixed, non-denominational school, perhaps at a location such as the old SIPTU College on the South Circular Road. 

We also ask that the Minister, or her school planning team, meet with local representatives and parents.

This committee takes the opportunity to congratulate Dublin City Council, community groups, youth services and residents associations for the great success of both the Drimnagh Summer Festival and the Ballyfermot-Cherry Orchard Arts Festival.

M264   Councillor Máire Devine

The loss of the Tivoli Theatre and other cultural spaces is keenly felt by the Dublin 8 community. The Rupert Guinness Theatre on Watling St has been lying empty over 20 years. It would be an amazing asset for Dublin to get this fabulous building refurbished and brought back to life. This Committee requests that DCC commence engagement with Diageo and reach agreement for a renewed cultural space to serve the Liberties and the city.

Yet again this committee demands that the Iveagh Market’s essential stabilising works be commenced immediately. That the Francis Street doors be opened at agreed times to allow public visibility (behind the locked gates so there is no issue re health and safety) and that the tender package be inspected by interested parties and fast tracked with the urgency that the fragility of the building requires.

That this committee welcome the recent safety report on Robinsons Court compiled by AGS. The overdue installation of gates is recommended but somewhat vague. We request a more thorough technical report that demonstrates how this will be achieved and timeline for these works be provided.

This Committee agree to inviting senior pupils and their teacher from Inchicore National School to present to members in the late Autumn.
