Lord Mayor Hazel Chu opened the Annual Meeting by welcoming Councillors back to the Round Room at the Mansion House as well as those who were participating  remotely. She thanked all her fellow Councillors and City Council Management for their support during what was a very difficult and turbulent year which saw the City endure many losses. It had been an honour and privilege to hold the position of Lord Mayor during this time. She highlighted her work in relation to inclusion, integration and fighting discrimination in the City and as well addressing the challenge of homelessness. In particular the creation of a cross party Task Force on Homelessness was a major achievement.

 

The Lord Mayor paid tribute to the staff of the Mansion House for their hard work and professionalism. She also thanked her husband Patrick, her mother Stella and all her friends and colleagues for their support and advice over the year. The Lord Mayor also thanked her Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Mary Callaghan.

 

Tributes were paid to the outgoing Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor by representatives of all the political groups on the Council, who thanked them for their service and leadership during the pandemic crisis.  

 

The Chief Executive on behalf of the management and staff of Dublin City Council thanked the Lord Mayor for her support during the COVID 19 pandemic and paid tribute to her valuable contribution during an incredibly difficult period for the city of Dublin.  He also acknowledged the work of the Deputy Lord Mayor Mary Callaghan as an ambassador for the City.

To elect from the Members of the City Council a person to be Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin from 28th June 2021 to the day of the Annual Meeting of City Council to be held on Monday, 27th June 2022.

It was moved by Cllr. Mary Freehill and seconded by Cllr. Catherine Stocker “that Councillor Alison Gilliland is proposed for the office of Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin for the period from 28th June, 20201 to continue in such office (subject to her death, resignation, disqualification, removal from office or otherwise ceasing to be a Member of the City Council) until her successor shall have been elected at the Annual Meeting of the City Council in June 2022”.

 

As no other candidates were proposed Cllr. Alison Gilliland was unanimously elected Lord Mayor and was invested with the Collar of SS and the Insignia of Office. The Members of the City Council, Chief Executive and staff all warmly congratulated the newly elected Lord Mayor.

 

Lord Mayor Gilliland then took the chair and thanked her fellow Councillors for their support in electing her as Lord Mayor. She paid tribute to outgoing Lord Mayor Hazel Chu who had done a wonderful job in the most difficult of circumstances. She outlined her hopes and aspirations for the year ahead with particular emphasis on Housing. The provision of affordable housing for all citizens will be the central theme of her time in office. The building of affordable public housing  on public land, bringing vacant units bank into use and the efficient turnaround of voids will be key in reducing the housing waiting lists.

 

The Lord Mayor also paid tribute to those women who came before her in this role. They helped pave the way for her and she hoped that her time in office will be an example to other woman and young girls. Being a role model is an important part of her responsibility and she will use her position to give voice to the concerns of women and girls in the City and to champion and advocate for their rights.

The outgoing Deputy Lord Mayor Mary Callaghan congratulated Lord Mayor Gilliland on her election and wished her well for the year ahead. She thanked outgoing Lord Mayor Hazel Chu for her commitment and dedication over the last twelve months especially in relation to standing up to and speaking out against discrimination. She also extended her thanks to the staff of the Mansion House for their support during her time in Office.

 

Lord Mayor Gilliland then called for nominations for the position of Deputy Lord Mayor.

 

It was moved by Cllr. Declan Meenagh and seconded by Cllr. Dermot Lacey “that Councillor Joe Costello is proposed for the office of Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin for the period 28th June 2021 to continue in such office (subject to his death, resignation, disqualification, removal from office or otherwise ceasing to be a member of the City Council) until his successor shall have been elected at the Annual Meeting of the City Council in June 2022”.

 

As no other candidates were proposed Cllr. Joe Costello was unanimously elected Deputy Lord Mayor.

 

The new Deputy Lord Mayor was then warmly congratulated by the Lord Mayor, and Members of the City Council. The Deputy Lord Mayor thanked his party colleagues and all Members of the City Council for electing him and said he looked forward to working with them during his time in office. He was committed to supporting the Lord Mayor in achieving her aspirations for the year ahead as well as promoting Community Development through urban and neighbourhood renewal. He also welcomed the establishment of the European Office within the Council which would be beneficial to the City and Councillors by promoting and strengthening Local Government.
