February 2020 Motions

DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL

SOUTH CENTRAL AREA COMMITTEE

19th February 2020

M.34    Councillors Michael Pidgeon, Rebecca Moynihan, Tina MacVeigh, Críona Dhálaigh and Michael Watters

That this Area Committee recognises the chronic under-provision of community facilities in the Oliver Bond House and Bridgefoot Street areas. A council-owned site at the junction of Bridgefoot Street and Island Street has been vacant/derelict for some time. This committee calls for this site to be used to provide a local community centre.

M.35    Councillor Vincent Jackson

That Dublin City Council look at the possibility of lobbying the Department of Transport, Department of Culture so that the National Transport Museum be moved from Malahide to the CIE works at Inchicore and that this beautiful, totally underused complex be designated as a museum of industrial heritage & engineering. There is huge potential in developing tourism in this part of the city and at the same time saving this unique part of our heritage. I am aware that the Transport Museum needs to move from Malahide as the property is to be sold. In addition can DCC provide a small amount of financial support to the retention and development of this project which houses many former Dublin City Fire Tenders etc.?

M.36    Councillor Daithí Doolan

This Area Committee expresses deep concern at Garda Commissioner Drew Harris’s announcement that he intends to cut €23m from the Dublin Garda budget. This cut is unacceptable and should not go ahead. We call on the Garda Commissioner to give a commitment that no cut will be imposed on the Dublin Garda budget.

M.37    Councillor Vincent Jackson

Following on from a recent public meeting which was attended by over 200 people in the Inchicore Area, residents are looking for the installation of some additional CCTV cameras in the area to help deter this ongoing problem which is destroying the quality of life for many in the area. In addition, whilst welcoming the improvements in public lighting along the Grand Canal and along the North Bank, residents are looking for improvements on the lighting / lamp standards on the South Side of the Grand Canal.  I am aware of the Jack Nolan scoping report and am hopeful this will deliver some tangible benefits to the area.
