To elect from the Members of the City Council a person to be Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin from 26th June 2023 to the day of the Annual Meeting of City Council to be held on the fourteenth day after the date of the poll of the 2024 Local Elections.

To elect from the Members of the City Council a person to be Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin from 27th June 2022 to the day of the Annual Meeting of City Council to be held on Monday, 26th June 2023.

Lord Mayor Conroy invited Deputy Lord Mayor Joe Costello to address the Members.

 

Deputy Lord Mayor Joe Costello paid tribute to the outgoing Lord Mayor Alison Gilliland and congratulated her on a very successful year in office. It was an honour to support her and represent the Office of Lord Mayor at various events during the past year. He wished the new Lord Mayor every success in the year ahead and he also extended his thanks to his predecessor in the role of Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Mary Callaghan.    

 

The Lord Mayor then called for nominations for the role of Deputy Lord Mayor.

 

It was moved by Cllr. Michael Pidgeon and seconded by Cllr. Cat O’Driscoll “that Councillor Darcy Lonergan is proposed for the office of Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin for the period 27th June 2022 to continue in such office (subject to her death, resignation, disqualification, removal from office or otherwise ceasing to be a member of the City Council) until her successor shall have been elected at the Annual Meeting of the City Council in June 2023”.

 

As no other candidates were proposed Cllr. Darcy Lonergan was unanimously elected Deputy Lord Mayor.

 

The new Deputy Lord Mayor was then warmly congratulated by the Lord Mayor, and Members of the City Council. The Deputy Lord Mayor thanked her party colleagues and all Members of the City Council for electing her and said she looked forward to working with them during her time in office. She was committed to supporting the Lord Mayor in achieving her aspirations for the year ahead as well as promoting those issues important to her such as the Circular Economy and the invaluable work of the Women’s Committee. She also paid tribute to the outgoing Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr. Joe Costello and thanked him for his service during his time in office.

 

The Lord Mayor thanked the Members for their time and contributions and concluded the meeting by inviting them all to a reception in the Mansion House.

The outgoing Deputy Lord Mayor Mary Callaghan congratulated Lord Mayor Gilliland on her election and wished her well for the year ahead. She thanked outgoing Lord Mayor Hazel Chu for her commitment and dedication over the last twelve months especially in relation to standing up to and speaking out against discrimination. She also extended her thanks to the staff of the Mansion House for their support during her time in Office.

Dermot Lacey “that Councillor Joe Costello is proposed for the office of Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin for the period 28th June 2021 to continue in such office (subject to his death, resignation, disqualification, removal from office or otherwise ceasing to be a member of the City Council) until his successor shall have been elected at the Annual Meeting of the City Council in June 2022”.

The Deputy Lord Mayor thanked his party colleagues and all Members of the City Council for electing him and said he looked forward to working with them during his time in office. He was committed to supporting the Lord Mayor in achieving her aspirations for the year ahead as well as promoting Community Development through urban and neighbourhood renewal. He also welcomed the establishment of the European Office within the Council which would be beneficial to the City and Councillors by promoting and strengthening Local Government.
